The Church of San Pietro and the nearby
quarter are an example of reutilization of ancient Roman structures
as they were built during the Middle Ages on the ruins of the
Cellomaio’s baths (cella major). These baths were built
according to the wish of the emperor Caracalla for his legion
and their ruins are still noteworthy.
San Pietro is the most ancient of Albano’s churches and its plan coincides
with that of a whole room of the baths. In its walls it is possible
identify the different layers built during the centuries. The
portal’s jambs are made of architraves probably taken
from the Pompey’s villa, while the belfry, built in the
13th century, has double mullions and majolica-echinus.
