The Sanctuary is consecrated to the
Virgin's holy icon, which once was located on a crag along
the Via Appia near Galloro.
In 1616 there were the first miracles and therefore it was
decided to built a chapel made of wood to preserve this icon.
Later on thanks to the contribution of the Ariccia's master
Paolo Savelli, it was built a church. Approximately in 1630,
Urban VII Barberini (1623-1644) commissioned Bernini to build
an high altar and in 1661, when the Chigi's Family was owner
of Ariccia, the architect renewed the façade, the floor,
the dome and the two chapels consecrated to San Tommaso di Villanova
and San Francesco di Sales, with paintings by G. Gimignani and
G. Borgognone.
