The church was probably built by the
Cistercian Monks and widened in 1300. It was the core of the ancient
town enclosed by the walls.
The church was restored during the 17thcentury by the architect
G. A. de Rossi, whose work is coeval to that of Bernini's
and Borromini's maturity. The building was restored several
times and during the last works were discovered some ruins,
that can be dated back to the Roman age. The interior is decorated
by numerous paintings among which it is worth mentioning the
painting on the high altar representing the Virgin, Jesus and
the Apostles Pietro and Paolo, painted by F. Cozza and C. Maratta,
i.e. the sign of Genzano's transformation from village
to town on historical and artistic level.
