This church is incorporated in the
greater structure of the convent of the Dominican nuns. This convent
was founded in 1676 by Sister Isabella Colonna. The church was
built in 1712 by the architect Giuseppe Sardi (1630-1699). The
façade-portal represents a typical choice of baroque architects
to satisfy the needs of the convent, such as meditation and contemplation.
Sardi planned a characteristic element projecting from the austere
façade of the convent utilizing aspects of the baroque
such as an architrave with double flexions, lateral volutes, and
a tympanum ending in a spire. The church has a central plan, with
a long nave.
The central space consists of an hemispheric dome with a lunette
where there are some windows connecting the interior of the
convent and the choir, with the church. The dome, thanks to
the triangular shape of the lunettes, is segmented in a structure
whose aim is to glorify the Madonna and woman's virginity,
using the symbol of the order.
The typical style of the Roman baroque architects characterizes
this church, making it one of the most important monuments of
the Castelli Romani.
