S. Silvestro - S. Maria del Castagno

Town: MONTE COMPATRI

From the hill towering over Monte Compatri it is possible to see the typical shape of the crater of the Monti Tuscolani and of Monte Artemisio. This is a charming panorama, and the summer cool breeze is a really pleasure. During Paolo V and Urban VIII papacy, the faithful people climbed the slope leading from Monte Compatri to the Santa Maria del Castagno chapel, to receive their indulgences, crossing the shadowy woods and suffering from fatigues. Nowadays, crossing the same path, after the church you can see a charming panorama: Tuscolo, Monte Cavo and the Artemisio Mounts, forming an horseshoe-shaped crater, with its concavity toward west, south-west. From the convent of San Silvestro you can see the wide chestnut woods, extending from Colle Lano, through Monte Cavo’s slopes to Monti delle Faete.

Area's Natural Characteristics
During spring and summer while flying in the sky over this area, the common swifts and the martins try to catch insects and to reach the peak of this hill. Their black feathers remind of those of the swallow, but as for the martins it is concerned, they have white feathers on the venter and on the tail. Among the broom’s bushes during spring and summer it is possible to hear the chirp of the hippolais polyglotta, a small yellow bird. Among the bushes it is possible to hear also the chirp of the Sylvia melanocephala, a small Mediterranean passerine with a red eye and a black head.

Place
The asphalted road leading to the Convent begins from Piazza Garibaldi in Monte Compatri. To reach the hill, from the Convent of San Silvestro, cross the slope (via Stella Polare) (1 km).
